William E. Standley, Mayor

Bill Standley came to Farmington, New Mexico in 1989.

Upon his discharge from the Marines, Bill began a career with Sears Roebuck & Company that lasted 31 years, holding many management positions. After retiring from Sears in 1994, he was the Advertising Director with the Farmington Daily Times. Bill was then hired as the General Manager for Construction Supply Company, remaining there until he decided to run for public office.

In his 17 years of living in Farmington Bill has been actively involved in the community, serving as President of the Farmington Chamber of Commerce and the Redcoats Ambassadors named Redcoat of the Year – 1999) as well as President of San Juan United Way Board, President of Anasazi Foundation Board and San Juan Rotary Club (named a Paul Harris Fellow). He is a member of the Farmington Convention and Visitors Bureau Board.

Mr. Standley was appointed to the City of Farmington Capital Improvement Commission by former Mayor Tom Taylor in 1996 and graduated from both the Citizens Police Academy and the Citizens Fire Academy. He is also a graduate of Leadership San Juan and Leadership New Mexico. Bill was elected to the office of Mayor in March, 1998 and since that time has served on the Community and Economic Development (CED) Steering Committee and the information Technology and Communications (ITC) Policy Committee for the National League of Cities. He also serves on the Better Business Bureau Board, San Juan Economic Development Services Board, and the Presbyterian Medical Services (PMS) Foundation Board (current Chairman). Mayor Standley is President of the recently formed Totah Behavioral Health Authority and is Past-President of the New Mexico Municipal League. He is one of two New Mexico elected municipal officials to receive the first Certified Municipal Official designation from the Municipal Officials Leadership Institute (MOLI). He was named as the inaugural “Man of the Year” in 2000 at the Four Corners Conference for Professional Development in Farmington, the “Citizen of the Year” award for 2001 from the Farmington Chamber of Commerce, the Public Service Award at the New Mexico Economic Vitality Summit in August 2002 and, more recently, received the 2003 “Healthcare Advocacy Award” from San Juan Regional Medical Center. By the Governor’s appointment, Mayor Standley chaired the Governor’s Task Force on Rural Air Service and serves on the Executive Board of the Litter Control Council.
