Animas Waterline Project - $2,109,688
During the 1950's the City of Farmington experienced rapid growth with population expanding from approximately 3,600 to more than 23,000 in 1960. With the rapid expansion came the installation of many miles of sewer and water lines. WHile many of these older utility lines have been replaced, many more remain in the system and are either undersized nearing their 50 year life expectancy, or both.
The Animas Street Waterline Project lies within the City's recently established Metropolitan Redevelopment Area [MRA]. The purpose of the MRA is to revitalize and stimulate redevelopment of our downtown district. The City is working with a wide range of stakeholders in the area including San Juan Regional Medical Center, property owners, businesses, residents, and public agencies. The Animas Waterline Project is an important contribution by the City and will help improve both water quality and public safety through fire suppression.
The Animas Street waterline was constructed in the 1950's. The replacement of this pipeline will eliminate a tuberculation problem where metals and calcium deposits have collected on the interior of the pipe, thus degrading water quality and restricting the effective inside diameter and thus the capacity. The existing 4" and 6" waterlines will be upgraded to 12" waterline to meet growing demands on the system to improve fire suppression capabilities within the City's downtown district. This project is to construct approximately 14,000 linear feet of waterline in Animas.
