Major Thoroughfare Plan

AMENDMENT TO THE CITY'S MAJOR THOROUGHFARE PLAN

Periodically, the City of Farmington updates/amends its Major Thoroughfare Plan (MTP), which is part of the City’s Comprehensive Plan.  The MTP is a map that addresses transportation improvement needs over a 20-year planning period.  It serves as a guide for current and future roadways within the City and its Planning and Platting Jurisdiction.  The City’s MTP was last updated in February 2009.

Recently, the City Council directed staff to develop an amendment to the MTP.  This proposed MTP amendment follows the recent approval of a regional major thoroughfare plan developed by the Farmington Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).  The MPO is the regional transportation planning entity serving the cities of Farmington, Aztec, Bloomfield, and San Juan County.  The Farmington MPO’s major thoroughfare plan was developed through a similar regional public process from June 2010 to October 2011.

The City’s amendment process includes public open houses, in addition to public meetings at the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council.  Open Houses were held in January and February.  Below is a list of the locations, dates and times for the planned public open houses.  The public hearings/meetings at the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council will be advertised in the Daily Times and posted to the City’s web page.

If you wish to provide comments, please attend one of the public open houses or e-mail your comments to Fran Fillerup, Associate Planner, at ffillerup@fmtn.org.  Your comments will be provided to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council.  If you have any questions, please call Fran at (505) 599-1282.

GLADE ROAD INFORMATION

Glade Road north of Pinon Hills Boulevard is currently classified as a collector road on the City's MTP and is a lesser-maintained gravel road of San Juan County (Road 1980).  It serves as the access road to the Glade Run Recreation Area.  In order to clarify the status of Glade Road as a collector, a note may be added to the City's MTP indicating that it is an unpaved collector for recreational use.  Glade Road would remain on the City's MTP as a collector as it serves recreational and other uses in and adjacent to the Farmington city limits.
