Emergency Medical Services
All Fire Department personnel are required to become New Mexico Certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) within their first year of employment.
As part of the Emergency Medical Services team, the Farmington Fire Department is dedicated to saving lives.
From the Doctors and Nurses who staff San Juan Regional Medical Center's (S.J.R.M.C.) Trauma Center, and the Paramedics who provide services on the Tri-City based Ambulances and S.J.R.M.C. Air Care Teams, to the Fire Department's EMT's, all pride themselves in preventing the sudden loss of life and disability from catastrophic accidents and illnesses.
In a medical emergency, a series of events occur that lead to a patient receiving lifesaving care. First the emergency must be detected. This is dependent on someone notifying a 9-1-1 operator of an incident. Once a call is received, Fire Department EMT's and S.J.R.M.C. Paramedics are sent to the scene of the illness or accident.
Fire Department EMT's, dispatched from the nearest Fire Station, will arrive and access the situation, the patient and render basic life support until the arrival of the Paramedics. Depending on the location of the call and other requests for Paramedics in Aztec, Bloomfield, or the County, Fire Department EMT's will generally be the first responders to reach a patient.
The Paramedics, who are able to provide an advanced level of life support, will take over medical control of the scene when they arrive. At the scene, EMT's and Paramedics working as a team, will administer medical care prior to the safe transport of the patient to the Emergency Room Staff at the Hospital.
