PROPOSED
REGIONAL ANIMAL SHELTER
We would appreciate your support of the proposed Regional Animal Shelter to benefit San Juan County and replace the current Farmington Animal Shelter.
This new shelter will be a "green" facility - the first of its kind in the region - and will achieve a Silver LEED Certification. The shelter will create opportunities for collaboration with the San Juan College Vet Tech program, the San Juan County Detention Center and Juvenile Program, the Navajo Nation, local schools, and expand the shelter's educational efforts within the community.
The current Farmington Animal Shelter to be replaced is over 30 years old, wedged between the Waste Water Treatment Plant and the Power Plant with no place to expand, and only contains 54 kennels. Not one of our dog kennels meets the Humane Society of the United States regulations for space required per dog and we are forced to place several dogs in each kennel. In 2007, the current shelter received an average of 25 new animals each day. With only 54 kennels to house these animals in a non-adoptive-friendly facility, the shelter must euthanize an average of 19 animals every day due to space restrictions.
The new shelter will be located on 10 acres of BLM land north of the County Detention Center on Andrea Dr. This $5M facility will be larger with a better design, for the environment and to encourage higher adoption rates, on enough land to allow for future expansion. We have received funding from the State Legislature, have approached the Federal Legislature and San Juan County, and will approach the Navajo Nation. We have people working on grants and have set a goal of $1.5M in our local fundraising efforts.
