Bomb Squad

The Farmington Police Department Bomb Squad responds to incidents involving explosives, suspected explosive related items, security of VIPs, and bomb threats. The team assists agencies in Durango, Ouray, and La Plata County, Colorado, San Juan County, NM, and Reservation Law Enforcement in eliminating and investigating explosive hazards and improvised explosive devices.

The 7 man squad safely destroyed over 400 pounds of explosives and over 200 pounds of confiscated fireworks during 2008. They also expended over 200 man-hours providing an additional 32 public service requests for non-emergency assistance such as training, briefings, and demonstrations. Programs are  in place to train and brief local oil and gas companies in meeting Homeland Security and Transportation Security Administration requirements for protecting citizens and property against terrorist acts. The Bomb Squad, in conjunction with San Juan County Emergency Management, completed the delivery of a new Bomb Squad Response and Command Vehicle purchased with Homeland Security Funds, greatly enhancing the capability of first responders in the 4 corners area to respond to and cope with explosive and terrorist incidents.
