District Coordinator Unit

The District Coordinator Unit (DCU) is comprised of four District Coordinator Officers assigned to specific areas within the city.  There are four Code Compliance Officers that are also assigned to the same specific areas of the city.  The DCU officers partner with the Code Compliance officers when necessary for code enforcement.  There are two Bike Patrol officers that are primarily assigned to the downtown area, east retail corridor area and city parks.  The DCU is supervised by a sergeant that reports directly to the Operations Captain.  The DCU was expanded from one officer to four in January of 2007.  The Code Compliance Division was assigned to the Police Department in late October 2007.

The District Coordinator Unit is a Community Policing/Problem Oriented Policing Unit.  The community policing effort promotes Neighborhood Watch Programs, partners with Faith Based and Community Action groups, Business Watch Programs, Crime Free Multi-Housing Programs, schools, civic organizations, business professional organizations and other law enforcement organizations.

Part of the community policing effort is education of the public about crime prevention.  The DCU is involved in the Citizens Police Academy and the Women Against Crime Program.   The Women Against Crime Program is a crime prevention education effort tailored for women.  Classes on home security, drug recognition, internet safety, criminal street gangs, sexual assault, self defense and an introduction to firearms are offered.  The classes are held on Tuesday evening from 6:00-9:00.  Local restaurants provide food donations for the class participants.  The program has been very successful, each class has filled and a waiting list maintained for future classes.  Three classes are held per year with 30-40 participants in each class.

In addition to those established programs DCU officers frequently do presentations, educating citizens about crime prevention, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) safety improvements to residences, businesses and multi-housing areas. DCU officers are frequently requested for public speaking engagements, radio shows or print media interviews.  Crime prevention material is provided to the public at community events such as Freedom Days, River Fest, Kid Fest.  DCU officers are certified Child Restraint System Technicians involved in Car Seat Fitting Stations and public education about car seat safety.
