Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is tasked with the responsibility of responding to calls for service, as well as remaining pro-active and resolving problems utilizing community policing concepts. The 24-hour operation is structured into three 10-hour shifts that provide city wide coverage.
In addition to the patrol officers, the many demands of law enforcement are met with the aid of Traffic Officers, Community Service Officers (CSO's), Downtown Bike Patrol Officers, Canine Officers and Police Assistants.
The officers working Patrol currently have three offices available to them. These offices can be used by officers when they need to use a phone or a place to meet with citizens, and are located at the old Fire Station Number Four located on McCormick School Road, The old library building at City Center, and the Immediate Care Center.
The use of Field Evidence Technicians has been a great benefit to patrol officers conducting investigations in which evidence must be gathered. Field Evidence Technicians are specially trained patrol officers and CSO's, who have developed the art of photography and lifting latent prints. Not only does this service expedite an officer's investigation, it relieves detectives from having to respond to the scene.
The Police Assistant position consists of retired police officers who are hired on a part-time basis. Their primary duties are to staff the Immediate Care Center office, perform background checks, and do case follow-up for the Detective Division. This is a non-uniformed, non-commissioned position.
