Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers are specially trained personnel within the Farmington Police Department. SWAT officers are called upon in situations requiring expertise and equipment beyond that normally used by field officers. SWAT has 23 officers who are assigned to specialty units within the team, including Hostage Rescue, Negotiations, and Counter Sniper. The SWAT team also has numerous personnel from within the Farmington Police Department and Farmington Fire Department who are attached as adjunct units. These units include Tactical Medics, K-9 handlers and the Bomb Squad.
In order to maintain proficiency, all SWAT members are required to be in excellent physical condition, as well as demonstrate above average proficiency with the weapons they may be assigned. The unit trains two days each month.
The SWAT team conducts one 24-hour assessment for new SWAT officers where candidates are required to participate in various tasks designed to test their skills during individual exercises and in a team environment. The candidates are required to participate in all events during the twenty-four hour period to also test stamina.
