The Traffic Unit of the Farmington Police Department consists of ten officers, which include a Sergeant, a Corporal, four daytime Traffic Officers, two night time Traffic/DWI Officers, and two DWI Officers. The primary roles within the Division are enforcement of traffic laws, investigation of traffic crashes, education and information sharing with the public, and DWI enforcement and reduction.
The Farmington Police Department serves a population of more than 45,000 and patrols more than 33 square miles. The Departments certified officers participate in a number of selective enforcement efforts. These programs are administered through the New Mexico Traffic Safety Bureau and Safer New Mexico Now. These grants include programs such as Operation DWI (ODWI), Community DWI (CDWI), and Operation Buckle Down (OBD), Click it or Ticket and Selective Traffic Enforcement (STEP) Program. All of these programs are geared toward gaining voluntary compliance of the citizens with regard to violations that contribute to traffic crashes.
The Traffic Division addresses concerns using the most appropriate methods. A few of the methods used are enforcing traffic laws, speed trailers (aid in driver education and driver awareness), and traffic counters (which aid in data collection, indicating the total number of vehicles, time of day roadway is most commonly used as well as average speeds).
