Detective Division

The primary function of the Detective Division is to provide follow-up criminal investigations for crimes that occur within the Farmington Police jurisdiction. In addition, the Detective Division administers the School Resource Officer, Criminal Intelligence and Crime Analysis programs, and the Crime Lab.

Detective Division personnel are assigned to investigate a wide variety of crimes, including violent crimes, crimes against children, property crimes, white collar crimes, arson, and juvenile crimes.

Detective Division personnel also support the Law Enforcement Academy and Citizens Police Academy by instructing and participating in various classes. These classes include detective and major crime investigation, domestic violence investigations, prosecution in the areas of violent crime, sex crimes, crimes against children, property crimes, white collar crimes, juvenile law and justice, handling juveniles and their problems, and explosives recognition.

Juvenile Unit

Numerous cases involving juveniles are assigned to the Juvenile Detective and the six Resource Officers.

Diversionary programs offered and facilitated by the Juvenile Detective and the School Resource Officers (SROs) include:
  • Farmington Police Counseling and Resource Information (this is provided for juveniles and their parents when In-House Supervision or formal charges are not appropriate)
  • Farmington Police In-House Supervision Program
  • Shoplifting Awareness Class
  • Teen Alcohol Awareness Class

The Juvenile Detective is also responsible for investigations involving juveniles not attending Farmington Schools, case screening and assignment for SRO's, and coordinating the diversion programs. The Juvenile Detective is involved with this Department's summer youth program and also acts as liaison with the Juvenile District Attorney and Juvenile Probation and Parole Officers.

The Juvenile Detective is the representative for the Farmington Police Department on various juvenile justice focus groups including
  • San Juan County Juvenile Justice Committee
  • Underage Drinking Focus Group
  • Grade Court
  • Drug Court

In addition, the juvenile detective has been tasked with pre-academy, academy, and post-academy training of police officers regarding juvenile procedures and policy.
