Riverside Nature Center

Observe birds and animals from large windows overlooking a wetland where food and water attract wildlife. Exhibits feature the plants and animals of the riverside with emphasis on historic uses and ecosystems. Outside herb and xeriscape demonstration gardens are located adjacent to the facility. Garden Volunteers Day at Nature Center

Would you like to learn more about herbs, native plants, and xeriscape landscaping, or do you just enjoy gardening? bring your garden gloves and come to the Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off of Browning Parkway on Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to help prepare the gardens, update the signs, and enjoy working together. There are tasks for everyone whatever your skills or physical abilities. Please RSVP to Donna Thatcher at 599-1422 or by email at dthatcher@fmtn.org.  


Riverside Nature Center Wetlands

The Nature Center was originally designed to overlook a wetlands of one of the oxbows which once existed along the Animas River. The wetlands were constructed and the wildlife have inhabited it. The wetlands serve as a refuge for wildlife and provides people an unique viewing opportunity from the Nature Center and specific points on the trail. Come and enjoy this wonderful hideaway in Animas Park

While visiting the Nature Center, don't forget to visit the Herb and Xeriscape Gardens.

Join Education Specialist Donna Thatcher and the Tuesday Birders for a guided bird walk through Animas and Berg parks. Plan for a leisurely stroll of one to two miles and don’t forget your binoculars. Come early for coffee or stay late and bring food for lunch in the observation room.

Weekly Programming


Tuesdays from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. October through March and 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. April through September. Join Donna Thatcher, Education Specialist, and other birders for bird watching from the Riverside Nature Center and a leisurely walk of 1 to 2 miles in Animas and Berg Parks. Info: (505) 599-1422

On Tuesdays, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., preschool children and their families bring lunch and meet at the Riverside Nature Center in Animas Park off Browning Parkway for a picnic followed by a story or activity and a stroller-friendly walk in the park. Learn about plants, insects, birds, and all the interesting wildlife. Feed the friendly ducks, and go home in time for naps. This program continues throughout the spring and summer.
