City Councilor- Janis Jakino

Councilor Janis Jakino is a proud native New Mexican raised in Farmington. She has a diverse professional background, including real estate development and management, financial management, and county corrections. Councilor Jakino has a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Fort Lewis College and an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice from San Juan College. She entered public service in 2018 when she successfully ran for Farmington City Council. This year, Mayor Duckett appointed her as the Public Utility Commission liaison.


Councilor Jakino embodies the spirit of servant leadership and has dedicated her life to the well-being of her community. In 2017, she graduated from Leadership San Juan and went on to become a 2021 graduate of Leadership New Mexico Local Government Leadership Program. These programs help participants understand local and state issues and how they can help address them.    


Always looking to expand her knowledge to benefit others, she completed the Municipal Officials Leadership Institution Certification Program earning the distinguished designation of Certified Municipal Official. During the program, Councilor Jakino exceeded the required community service hours. She remains actively engaged in New Mexico Municipal League, where she serves on the Public Safety Policy Committee, joining other New Mexico elected officials and first responders in reviewing and developing policies that positively impact public safety. She also serves on the league’s Resolutions Committee, reviewing proposed resolutions and statements of municipal policy. Councilor Jakino was elected NMML director for District 1 in 2021 and again in 2023, representing municipalities in San Juan, McKinley, and Cibola counties. 


As an elected leader, Councilor Jakino prioritizes being present at events that unify the community and celebrate initiatives that strengthen Farmington. These events have included groundbreaking ceremonies, public safety events, and community meetings. 

  

Beyond her role as a city councilor, Janis continues to lend her talents to organizations and civic groups working tirelessly to make Farmington an exceptional place to call home.  She serves on the Four Corners Home for Children Board of Directors, is a San Juan Rotary Club member, chairs a local Caring for America program, and is a volunteer chaplain. Her commitment to fostering a strong and caring community is reflected in her many hours of volunteer service.


When she’s not serving her community, Councilor Jakino enjoys reading, working out, and traveling with her husband of 10 years, Brandon, a partner and co-owner of a local small business that also supports and serves the community.
