Community Involvement
The Farmington Police Department participates in various committees aimed at positively impacting the community, where law enforcement may be a key contributor.
Currently, these committees include the following.
San Juan County Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Task Force
The San Juan County Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Task Force is dedicated to providing an effective, coordinated, community response, which promotes the prevention of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, enhances victim safety and wellbeing, and holds offender accountable.
San Juan County Child Abuse Multidisciplinary Team
The mission of the San Juan County Child Abuse Multidisciplinary Team, is to ensure a collaborative approach to the investigation of child maltreatment and to achieve the best resolution possible in order to protect and empower children, educated families, and to see justice for our community.
San Juan County Mental Health Task Group
The San Juan County Mental Health Task Group was formed in response to the passing of House Joint Memorial 17 in which the New Mexico Legislature requested that the Behavioral Health Collaborative convene stakeholders to develop humane and effective strategies to serve people with mental health disorders. The aim is to reduce the number of people with mental health disorders that require law enforcement intervention and to reduce the number of people with mental health disorders in detention centers. The Collaborative in conjunction with the New Mexico Association of Counties (NMAC) convened stakeholders who invested significant time in developing a set of recommendations that included Community Crisis System Planning.

Community Health Improvement Council
Community Health Improvement Councils (CHICs) were created statewide in conjunction with the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) with the goal of getting local citizens, groups, service providers and county governments more involved in the manner in which health might be improved in each of their communities. The mission is to promote the health and well-being of all people in San Juan County and neighboring regions through broad-based dialogue, partnership, advocacy and unified action.
Our local CHIC is currently conducting an on-going awareness campaign addressing all the areas that can potentially affect a person’s health. Each month, a specific area is chosen and members of the group provide information to distribute using a variety of media.
April 2013 was dedicated to violence's impact on helath. FPD contributed to an Op-ed piece in the Farmington Daily Times. Read our article here. Read past articles here.
