Life Along the Rio Grande, an exhibit of contemporary fiber art presented by Studio Art Quilt Associates of New Mexico, was conceived as an opportunity for artists along the river's route to express their feelings and thoughts about whatever aspect of the river sparked their creativity. The response ranged from representational to abstract, including historical, scientific and geographical references, all while working within given size parameters.

A wide variety of techniques was used, from traditional piecing, hand stitching, and applique, to the newest synthetics and non-woven fabrics. The finest silk was used in some of the pieces, others had hand-dyed cottons, commercial prints and found objects which demonstrate the huge range of fiber materials that can be combined in today's art quilt.
