One of Farmington's most beloved outdoor amenities is a beautiful system of trails nestled along the Animas and San Juan rivers. The City of Farmington is working to connect the roughly 10 miles of trails beginning at Westland Park and ending at Largo Street behind Animas Valley Mall. The connection will provide runners, walkers and bikers a seamless course through the picturesque areas along the rivers. Construction to connect the trails began in September with the Among the Waters project.
The Among the Waters River Trail begins at Bisti Highway and continues about one mile to Murray Drive/Highway 64. The first third of the trail runs south along the San Juan River until it pivots northeast at the confluence and continues along the Animas River. This portion of the trail is unique because it not only parallels two rivers but also intersects the farmers' irrigation ditch and city water infrastructure ways. Trail users will cross three bridges as they journey through old willow and cottonwood bosques and enjoy scenic views of the bluffs exposed by elevation changes along the way.
Farmington Mayor Nate Duckett said the following about the project, "The Animas River trail system is a crown jewel of our area. We are excited to be expanding this amenity, not only for our community but for visitors."
Among the Waters project construction is anticipated to be completed in spring 2020. The project has been a collaborative effort by the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department; Public Works Department and City of Farmington leaders.
