Family Friendly Award

City of Farmington recognized as best family-friendly employer for fifth year

Status will give the City an edge in competition to attract highest-quality applicants

FARMINGTON, N.M. – The City of Farmington earned distinction for its workplace policies by Family Friendly New Mexico, a statewide initiative developed to recognize companies that have adopted policies that give New Mexico businesses an advantage in recruiting and retaining the best employees. This is the fifth consecutive year the City has received the award and the first time it’s received the new Platinum designation.

Human resources director Tom Swenk praised the City’s benefits and compensation manager, Jamie Wagoner, for her work in earning the distinction, “Ms. Wagoner spearheaded the City’s application for the award five years ago and works hard to maintain this important status.”

Swenk and his team were recognized during last night’s City Council meeting. Mayor Nate Duckett said the following, “Tom, we’re incredibly proud of you and your team for developing forward-thinking policies that give the City a competitive advantage in making this a family-friendly organization.”

The City offers a full range of benefits, including vacation and sick leave accrual, health insurance, flex spending accounts, a wellness program, life insurance, tuition reimbursement and an employee assistance program.

“As we grow the state’s economy, we have the opportunity to be a national leader in offering New Mexicans workplaces that help companies attract and keep the best workers,” said Giovanna Rossi, founder and director of Family Friendly New Mexico. “Implementing family-friendly policies can be a simple, concrete investment a company can make to ensure it can compete for highly qualified employees. Studies have shown that costs associated with creating family-friendly benefits are more than made up for in improved productivity, employee morale and employee retention. We are happy to recognize the City of Farmington as a leader in implementing family-friendly policies.”

The Family Friendly New Mexico initiative offers training, support and resources to businesses on how to implement more family-friendly policies; provides recognition to companies that offer their employees family-friendly benefits, and acts as a resource and clearinghouse of information for businesses and community leaders as they develop policies on issues such as paid family leave and childcare assistance.
